PETALING JAYA: Nurul Nuha Anwar, her family members, and DAP came together in defense of Lembah Pantai MP, Nurul Izzah Anwar, following her arrest earlier today.
The PKR vice-president was taken into custody after she turned up at the Dang Wangi police station today to give a statement regarding her involvement at the #KitaLawan rally held on March 7.
She was arrested for reading a speech which allegedly contained seditious remarks in questioning the Federal Court’s decision to jail her father, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
Nurul Nuha, said in a statement that her sister’s arrest was “illegal” and “unconstitutional”, according to The Malay Mail.
Her family members and DAP demanded that Nurul Izzah be freed immediately, while condemning the police for arresting her for sedition over a parliamentary speech.
Nurul Nuha added, “She is being investigated under the Sedition Act, but we vehemently reject the charge as the speech that she gave was protected under parliamentary immunity,”.
She condemned the selective persecution and “disproportional deployment of resources” shown by the police towards the opposition, while being silent about transgressions committed by the ruling party.
Nurul Nuha said they would organise a rally tonight outside the Jinjang police station where her sister was being kept, as a show of solidarity.
